Recommendation Tracking

January 14, 2011

Do people recommend stuff to you? Movies, music, books? I have found an easy way to remember and track recommendations using EckoIt.

Ok here is the situation. I am using EckoIt listening to a dinner conversation that occurred about a month ago. At this time, Wikileaks was getting ready to release CableGate. As we discuss this, my father-in-law brings up a movie he just watched…”All the President’s Men”. Sounds like I should watch it. So again, I pause EckoIt and create a tag for the movie. Here are some of the steps

1. Pause the audio timeline.
2. Create a new Tag ‘All_The_Presidents_Men’ with the text ‘Rich really loved watching this.’
3. Add the Tag ‘Movie_To_Get’ to ‘All_The_Presidents_Men’ so I can start tracking other movies people talk to me about.
5. Click Topic -> Link to Freebase, so I can get a nice synopsis of the movie on the page.
6. Click Topic -> Set Icon, make it look like a business suit.

Done. It sounds like a lot of steps but it took seconds. Here is what the page looks like:

A nice looking page for the movie in EckoIt

And now when I do watch this movie, I will be able to tag that it my timeline, and it will show up it on this page.

This allows me to listen to the time it was recommended to me, when I watched it, and maybe when I talked to others about it. Talk about recommendation tracking.

Pausing Life

January 14, 2011

About a month ago, I went out to dinner with our close family. We all get along really well together and there were a lot of conversations going on from the one I was focusing on.

Well, I am having a pretty boring Friday night tonight, so I thought I would check in and listen to the dialog we had at that table over a month ago. It’s like being there. Many of the same times I was smiling then, I am smiling as I listen to it again.

But what caught me off guard was a side conversation that I missed. My brother-in-law was talking about a game he got for his kids. So I paused life! Rather, I paused EckoIT, I started a new tab, and checked out the game. It does look pretty cool. I plan to get it for my kids when they are older.  So I added added a tag (‘to_get’) so I can listen to it in my to_get folder.

So two things struck me tonight. First, when I am bored I can bring a little fun back by reliving a fun evening. And second, I can pause life, and do a little research on what people are talking about.

(btw, the game was Super Scribblenauts)
